Morenci Turquoise
Posted by Nativo Arts on
Morenci turquoise comes from a copper mining district in southeastern Arizona and was, like Bisbee, recovered as a byproduct of large-scale copper operations. It was among the very first American turquoise varieties to reach the jewelry market, which helped it build a reputation early as a premium, collectible stone.
The color of Morenci turquoise ranges from light sky blue to a rare, deep saturated blue in its finest examples. What truly sets Morenci apart is its matrix: fine, irregular flecks of pyrite (fool’s gold) run through the stone and, once polished, catch the light with a silvery sparkle rather than the usual brown or black webbing seen in most turquoise. Morenci is also known for an unusual “birdseye” or “water web” matrix pattern in some of its material.
Because the Morenci deposit has long been depleted, genuine Morenci turquoise is difficult to find today and commands strong interest among serious collectors. Wearing a piece of vintage Native American jewelry set with true Morenci turquoise is often considered a mark of a well-built collection.
When evaluating a piece for authentic Morenci turquoise, look for that sparkling pyrite matrix against a blue field — it’s one of the more distinctive looks in the turquoise world. Learn more about the gemstones used across our pieces in our Gemstone Guide.
