This is a whimsical vintage Navajo necklace! It features a silver square pendant with a Blue Gem turquoise stone, a hand carved hummingbird and flowers, and a silver chain and clasp! A gorgeous statement necklace!
The Blue Gem turquoise mine, located near Battle Mountain, Nevada, is one of the most celebrated sources of high-quality turquoise in the American Southwest. Active primarily from the 1930s to the 1970s, the mine produced turquoise known for its exceptional hardness, durability, and a remarkable spectrum of colors, ranging from deep blue to bright green, often with golden or brown matrix patterns. This unique color variation is due to the presence of both copper and iron in the mineral deposits. Blue Gem turquoise is highly prized by jewelers and collectors, particularly for its ability to take a high polish, making it ideal for intricate silver settings. Although the mine is no longer operational, its turquoise remains a coveted material, embodying the rich geological and cultural heritage of Nevada.
