A Navajo squash blossom necklace is a traditional piece of Native American jewelry that originated from the Navajo tribe, known for their exceptional craftsmanship. It is a significant and highly sought-after item in Native American jewelry. The squash blossom necklace typically features a central pendant called the "naja," which is crescent-shaped and represents a Navajo or Spanish influence. The naja pendant is often adorned with gemstones or turquoise, a highly valued stone in Native American culture. From the bottom of the naja pendant, several silver "squash blossoms" or "blossom beads" are suspended, resembling the blossoms of a squash or pomegranate flower. These blossom beads are handcrafted from silver and have a distinctive flared shape. They may be plain or decorated with intricate stamp work or repoussé designs, showcasing the silversmith's skill and artistry. The necklace itself is usually made of silver beads, often handmade and strung on a chain or a leather cord. Navajo squash blossom necklaces have deep cultural and symbolic significance to the Navajo people. The squash blossom is considered a symbol of abundance, fertility, and prosperity. It is also believed to bring good luck and protect against evil spirits. The necklace is often worn by both men and women during important ceremonies, celebrations, and dances. Today, Navajo squash blossom necklaces are not only cherished for their cultural and historical significance but also admired as exquisite pieces of jewelry. They are highly valued by collectors and often sought after by individuals who appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of Native American art
