We are excited to auction off this fascinating Navajo necklace! It features a silver chain and clasp, with a silver pendant with a #8 turquoise stone surrounded by silver rope and hand stamped scalloped borders!
The Number 8 turquoise mine, located in Eureka County, Nevada, was discovered in 1925 and began operations in 1929. Renowned for producing high-quality turquoise, the mine is especially noted for its distinctive spiderweb matrix patterns, which range from golden brown to black, set against a backdrop of soft blue to blue-green stones. At its peak, the Number 8 mine yielded some of the largest turquoise nuggets ever found, including a remarkable 150-pound specimen. However, mining ceased in 1976, and the site is now primarily mined for gold. The turquoise extracted during its operational years remains highly prized among collectors and jewelers for its unique beauty and historical significance. Sterling silver, marked.
