The Cerrillos Turquoise Mine, located in the Cerrillos Hills of New Mexico, is one of the oldest and historically significant turquoise mines in North America. Mined for over a thousand years by various Indigenous peoples, including the Puebloan and Navajo, the Cerrillos mine has produced turquoise with a distinctive greenish-blue to light blue coloration. This turquoise is often characterized by intricate matrix patterns that range from golden brown to black. The Cerrillos mine played a crucial role in the cultural and economic life of the region's Native American communities, contributing to the creation of timeless and treasured turquoise jewelry. While the mine has seen periods of both active and dormant phases, its historical importance and the unique qualities of Cerrillos turquoise continue to make it highly valued among collectors and enthusiasts of Southwestern turquoise jewelry.
